  • INEOS Oxide closes power purchase agreement of up to 30, 000 MWh of wind energy a year, saving 11,000 tonnes of CO2 a year.
  • Green power originates from wind turbines of Wind aan de Stroom in Waaslandhaven
  • INEOS Oxide and on site partner companies Eval Europe (member of Kuraray) and Nippon Shokubai among first off-takers

From Wednesday 1 May, the chemical cluster at INEOS Oxide in Zwijndrecht will receive renewable energy generated in the Waaslandhaven. The green power will come from wind turbines owned by Wind aan de Stroom, the project developer for wind energy on the left bank of the Antwerp port area.

INEOS Oxide initiated and concluded an agreement with energy company Axpo, who will supply up to 30,000 MWh of wind energy a year, including the guarantees of origin for a five-year period. and will reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 11,000 tonnes a year.

As the host of 9 external parties, INEOS Oxide also wishes to support the sustainability objectives of the other companies at its site. Onsite partners Eval Europe (member of Kuraray) and Nippon Shokubai, along with INEOS Oxide itself, are among the first off-takers of the contract and will thus be able to include green energy in their energy mix for their production activities.

Johan Loots, business manager at INEOS Oxide stated:

"INEOS Oxide is constantly looking for synergies in its cooperation with the hosted companies on its site. Pooling the demand for renewable power and sourcing it collectively perfectly fits into this picture. We are pleased to be able to contribute in this way to making the activities of the Zwijndrecht chemical cluster more sustainable."

Axpo Senior Originator Jeremiah Tops said:

We’re thrilled to enable this important deal, which supports decarbonisation of the Antwerp port area and helps chemical companies reach their sustainability targets. Long-term corporate power purchase agreements not only advance the energy transition, one megawatt at a time, but also ensure price stability, protecting companies against the huge price swings we’ve seen in recent years.”

David Daggelinckx, CEO Wind aan de Stroom adds:

Wind aan de Stroom passionately commits to delivering the green energy generated in the Port of Antwerp to businesses within the port area. Partly thanks to our supply of sustainable energy to Ineos, about 80% of the local production is already consumed on-site starting from May 1st. This initiative significantly contributes to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy supply for the port.”

About INEOS Oxide

INEOS Oxide in Zwijndrecht (Antwerp) was founded in 1998 and is the cradle of the INEOS Group. The INEOS Oxide site employs more than 600 people and produces ethylene oxide, ethylidene norbornene, esters, alkoxylates, glycols and glycol ethers. They are the basis for well-known applications such as shampoos, cosmetic creams, detergents, EPDM rubber for roofing, anti-freeze products, medical applications, textiles,...

The site in Zwijndrecht is a typical 'cluster' site; indeed, it is also home to 9 other companies (Arkema, BECO2, Borealis, BYK-Chemie, Dow, Eval Europe (member of Kuraray), Messer, Nippon Gases and Nippon Shokubai). In this way, products and residual flows can be exchanged with each other in optimal conditions, creating a lot of synergies. INEOS provides services to its host companies such as the supply of electricity and steam or the maintenance of their installations.
